Intensive Outpatient

The outpatient program is perfect for those who have completed Landmark Recovery’s residential treatment or are looking for an ongoing program to keep you motivated and sobriety-focused. It is a comprehensive, intensive outpatient program to keep patients on the path to recovery.

What is an Outpatient Program?

An intensive Outpatient Program (known as IOP) is ideal for individuals who have already been stabilized from withdrawal symptoms and want to continue treatment outside of the normal residential setting. IOP is the primary treatment program recommended by clinical and medical staff for individuals who are newly sober or those who are in need of continual resources to help with addiction. Patients in IOP can attend multiple sessions per week while still living at home and meeting personal or work obligations.

Program Information

The intensive outpatient program is designed to be more intensive than outpatient therapy by offering a multi-modal, multidisciplinary program. It’s usually recommended for those transitioning from Landmark’s residential programs and medical detoxification. The following is the schedule and criteria broken up:

  • For at least 3 days a week, sessions will be held for at least 3 hours
  • According to individual facility medical director and patient requirements, sessions will be determined by need, but can include:
    • Individual therapy
    • Family therapy
    • Group therapy
    • Crisis intervention
    • Rehabilitation services
    • Case management services
    • SMART Recovery
    • Trauma-focused psycho-education
  • Session blocks are broken up as follows:
    • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

During an IOP patients will have access to psychiatrists, nurses, and drugs and alcohol counselors, and behavioral health professionals. An On-Call Corporate Policy is in place for patients to contact a staff member while outside of Landmark facilities.

How Long is IOP?

Plan to attend 10 times a week for a standard IOP. Still, early discharge is possible for patients if they no longer meet all parts of medical necessity as defined by the ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria for addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.

Can I Continue to Attend IOP After I Graduate?

Yes, alumni may continue attending sessions- one a week- without additional costs.

Will I Receive Individual Counseling?

Yes, all patients will receive individual counseling from a psychiatric consultant, as well as family and group therapy.

Does IOP Work?

A study published by the American Psychological Association in 2014 meta-analyzed 12 individuals, reputable research reports examining the efficacy of Intensive Outpatient Programs ranging from 1995 to 2012. It isn’t straightforward to determine the actual success rate of different rehab forms, but the results showed:

  • IOPs emerged as a critical facet of 21st-century addiction treatment for people who need a more intensive level of service than usual outpatient treatment, and they allow participants to avoid or step down successfully from inpatient services.
  • Overall, studies have found that 50 to 70 percent of participants reported abstinence at first follow-up, and most studies found that this outcome was similar for inpatient treatment.

IOP has, at least, two advantages compared to inpatient care:

  • Increased duration of treatment, which varies with the severity of the patient’s illness and his or her response.
  • The opportunity to engage and treat consumers while they remain in their home environments, which affords consumers the opportunity to practice newly-learned behaviors.
